☆ New mission could reveal secrets of the moon’s ‘hidden side’

In one lunar region, Japan’s “Moon Sniper” mission has beaten the odds and survived three long, frigid lunar nights since its sideways landing on January 19. The Tianwen-2 mission will visit the space rock later this decade. But first, China has set its sights on returning to the moon’s “hidden side.”An illustration depicts the far side of the moon, with Earth behind it. Since the Chang’e 4 mission in 2019, China remains the only country to have landed on the moon’s far side, sometimes called the “dark side” of the moon. Scientists hope that returning samples from the far side could solve some of the biggest remaining lunar mysteries, including the moon’s true origin.

So how does CEO Dave Calhoun still have a job? Boeing said it is working closely with regulators’ investigations and has plans in place to improve safety measures at its production facilities. Boeing’s 737 Max problems would be egregious enough on its own. But Dave Calhoun, Boeing’s chief executive since 2020, remains in his job, as does the entire C-suite at the time of this writing. Boeing hired Calhoun to right the ship.

Air India is getting a makeover. During its golden days, Air India was considered a top-tier carrier with fancy on-board bars, lounges, and luxe cabins. However, the government took over in the 1950s and ran Air India into disarray. The United Airlines CEO says he is “disappointed” in ongoing manufacturing problems at Boeing that have led to the grounding of dozens of United jetliners, and the airline will consider alternatives to buying a future, larger version of the Boeing 737 Max. United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said Tuesday that Boeing needs “real action” to restore its previous reputation for quality. United has a standing order for Max 10 jets, a larger version of the Max line. The grounding of the Max 9 jets is likely to further complicate Boeing's drive to get the new models approved. Doing without the Max 10 probably means United won't grow as fast as it had hoped, Kirby added.

NEW YORK (AP) — Boeing told employees Monday that it plans to increase quality inspections of its 737 Max 9 aircraft, following the failure of an emergency exit door panel on an Alaska Airlines flight last week. The inspections come after Federal regulators grounded the 737 Max, and that Boeing has said that after the Alaska Airlines flight and customer complaints, it is “clear that we are not where we need to be” on quality assurance and controls. The National Transportation Safety Board is focusing its investigation on plugs used to fill spots for extra doors when those exits are not required for safety reasons on Boeing 737 Max 9 jetliners. Since then, various manufacturing flaws have at times held up deliveries of Max jets and a larger Boeing plane, the 787. Last month, the company asked airlines to inspect their Max jets for a loose bolt in the rudder-control system.
